UN Climate Change Conference COP 29

11/11/2024 UN Climate Change Conference COP 29

This coming November 11, the 29th Conference of the Parties organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be held in Baku, where world leaders, scientists, activists, companies and representatives of civil society will meet to discuss and agree on measures to help combat climate change.

Under the slogan “Solidarity for a Green World”, they seek to adopt measures to combat climate change.

The record number of attendees was in 2023 in Dubai, with more than 60,000 attendees, and the need to move away from fossil fuels and commit to “loss and damage” financing for vulnerable countries affected by climate disasters was recognized for the first time.

The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to annual climate finance, and Azerbaijan, the host country, has proposed the creation of a Climate Finance Action Fund (CFAF), together with sustainable initiatives.

The objectives of this COP 29 are to reduce emissions, in order to keep the temperature below 1.5°C, and trillions of dollars in financing for countries to drastically reduce emissions and reduce the effects of climate change.

Although, the UN warns that “we are running out of time”, since we are practically on the way to a temperature increase of more than 3°C above pre-industrial levels, which is twice the amount established by the Paris Agreement, and also warns of the “destructive power of typhoons and cyclones, which will continue to increase and flood losses will increase”; without going any further, in Spain, we have just suffered the worst DANA of the century, which has caused devastating effects.

2030 emissions gaps

In conclusion, COP 29 is a crucial moment for defining the course of global climate policies in a context of environmental urgency, and the decisions taken at this conference will be decisive for the future of the planet.
