The history of Halloween
31/10/2024
Halloween is one of the most popular and expected celebrations of the year, it is celebrated around the world on October 31st, and it is tradition to dress up in spooky costumes; however, few people really know the origin of this tradition, and how it has evolved over the years.
The origin of this celebration dates back to more than 2000 years ago, with the festival of Samhain, especially in countries like Ireland, United Kingdom and France, where it marked the end of summer (and the harvest) and the beginning of winter, so it was associated with death, believing that the line between the world of the living and the dead faded, allowing spirits to return to Earth; so people light bonfires and dressed up to confuse and scare away ghosts.
In addition, as an anecdote, its name comes due to the expansion of Christianity, the holiday began to transform, and in the eighth century, Pope Gregory, declared November 1 as All Saints' Day, so that the eve of this, October 31, became known as All Hallows' Eve, which ended up deriving in the word Halloween.
Today Halloween is one of the biggest celebrations in the United States, where people of all ages dress up, decorate homes and carve pumpkins; also, since the 90's, it has gained much popularity in countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia.
Halloween represents much more than a night of terror, it is the opportunity to celebrate and have fun with a tradition that, although it has evolved, continues to be one of the most loved and celebrated of the year.
